Lawn Bowling

A tactical game involving rolling balls at a target on a flat lawn.

About this activity

Lawn bowling is played on a “bowling green,” a square-shaped, manicured, and levelled lawn of grass or turf measuring between 31m to 40m in length, and surrounded by a ditch. The objective of the game is to roll as many “bowls” (biased balls, weighted on one side) that end up closer to the “jack” (a smaller white ball) than the opposing team’s bowls without falling into the ditch. Bowls is a tactical game in which, beyond simply bowling close to the jack, players must anticipate future shots their opponents may take. The game can be played by two single opposing players, two teams of pairs, three teams of triples, or more.

Origins & history

The origins of lawn bowling are unclear, though elements of the game have been traced back to ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. By the 13th century, the game had spread throughout various countries in Europe, and was particularly well-established in Britain. Scotland is widely considered to be the home of lawn bowling, for Scottish bowlers played a large part in developing rules, code of laws, the flat green course and the prosperity of the game. Lawn bowling was introduced into Canada by British garrison officers in the late 19th century, and a tournament was held in Toronto by 1888. The game flourished over the turn of the century and continues to be enjoyed today.
