Disc Golf

A sport in which flying discs are thrown to a target, using the fewest possible number of throws.

About this activity

Disc golf is game in which flying discs are thrown into a target (called a "hole," as in golf), which is usually a raised metal basket. Using precision and accuracy, players throw the discs along a designated course, using the fewest throws possible. Most courses have nine or 18 holes, and often have different configurations for beginning and experienced players. Players begin by throwing a disc from a tee area, and progress towards the hole. The discs used in disc golf are both smaller and heavier than those used in games of catch and are designed for speed, control, and accuracy. Many players use multiple discs, which are weighted and sized differently to achieve different degrees of distance of control.

Origins & history

Activities similar to disc golf have been played in diverse locations at different times, including a recreational game created by schoolchildren in Saskatchewan in 1926. Disc golf began to be codified as a sport in the early 1960s, with a Frisbee Golf tournament being held in California in 1961. In the 1970s, the Disc Golf Association, Professional Disc Golf Association, and the Recreational Disc Golf Association were founded. The first Canadian tournament occurred on the Toronto Islands in 1980, which was also the site of the 1987 World Championship. Today, there are over 4000 disc golf courses in about 40 countries.
