About this activity
Netball is a sport that involves throwing, catching, and shooting a ball through a ring to score points. The net has no backboard and dribbling the ball is not allowed. There is frequent passing, as competitive netball games require the player holding the ball to only keep possession for three seconds. There are seven players on the court at once, with two offensive players, three mid-court players, and two defenders. Only the offensive players are allowed to shoot the ball. Failure to follow these rules in competitive matches results in a “penalty pass” or “penalty shot” for the opposing team.
Origins & history
Netball developed in England, and spread throughout the Commonwealth. It is most popular in, and is culturally associated with, Caribbean nations. Its origins in Canada and the GTA are not clear.
When it happens
Netball is a weekly activity for teams in the GTA. There are also national championships that occur every year.
Who takes part
Netball is primarily played by women. In Toronto, a large percentage of players have Caribbean origins, though there are also Sri Lankan and South African teams.
