About this activity
Soccer is a field sport played between two teams of 11 players, who try to score goal by kicking a ball into their opponents' goal. Players may use any part of their body other than their hands or arms to move the ball around the field, with the ultimate aim of scoring more goals by getting the ball into the opponents' net. Each goal is worth one point, and the team who is able to score the most points is the victor. One player can be designated as goalkeeper so is to remain in front of the goal posts and is able to use their hands to attempt to block or catch balls.
Origins & history
Although ball games played with feet existed in numerous cultures around the world, modern soccer ("football") developed in England in the 1800s. In Canada, one of the earliest games was played in Toronto in 1859. In 1901 the Ontario Football Association was formed and created the Ontario Cup. Nine years later, the first professional game was played in 1910. Currently it is one of the most popular participation sports in Canada, with the most registered players compared to all other organized sports.
