About this activity
Grounders is a children’s physical game that adapts the rules of tag to be played on a jungle gym. One player is considered "it," and has their eyes closed for the duration of the game. The rest of the players move around the jungle gym area to avoid being tagged by the player who is "it." If the player who is "it" yells "grounders," any players who are making contact with the ground at that moment are eliminated. The last player to be eliminated wins the game. As with many informal games, numerous rule variations exist.
Origins & history
The origins of grounders in Canada or the GTA are unclear.
When it happens
Grounders is usually played outdoors on jungle gym equipment, so it typically occurs in the warmer months (April-October). However, in the GTA, the game is also played year round at indoor jungle gym locations.
