About this activity
Tai chi is a martial art and exercise system consisting of slow motion routines. It can also be considered as a form of self-defence. Due to its adoption by people with little interest in intensive martial arts training, this alternative form of exercise is also understood as a form of therapy for the mind and body. A basic style of tai chi is known as the “Beijing 24 form,” which involves 24 postures. These 24 unique movements take four to eight minutes to perform, depending on the speed of the participants. Some other forms of tai chi involve over 100 unique postures.
Origins & history
Tai chi was practised on a small scale in Canada, but only started flourishing in the mainstream in the early 1970s after a large influx of Chinese immigrants. Master Moy Lin-Shin founded a tai chi association in Toronto and helped to expand tai chi across the country.
When it happens
Tai chi is often practiced as a daily exercise at public parks and community centres. It is occasionally performed at cultural festivals or other public events in the GTA.
Who takes part
Males and females of diverse ages and ethnocultural backgrounds, the majority of whom are older Chinese Canadians. Tai chi programs offered by the City of Toronto have helped encourage a diverse range of people to participate.
