Bhangra

A Punjabi freestyle dance in which participants dance to joyous songs.

About this activity

Bhangra is a Punjabi dance performed to the beat of a large drum, called a "dhol." The dhol may be accompanied by singing and other instruments. The drummer is considered the leader of the dance, energetically pounding the drum while it is strapped around his or her neck. Bhangra can be done individually, but most often it is done in a large group at parties. Performative dancers always perform barefoot and dress in a loose-hanging shirt called a "kurta." The entire performance combines jumps, squats, and a wide range of hand and foot motions.

Origins & history

Bhangra comes from the Punjab regions in Pakistan and India. Historically, bhangra emerged as a celebratory dance by farmers after successful growing seasons. It was brought to Canada by immigrants from Pakistan and India in the 1950s, though the version practised by Indian Sikhs is more common.

When it happens

Large celebrations such as Vaisakhi (Punjab New Year, often in April), weddings, and other cultural festivals.

Who takes part

Although mostly practised by Punjabi Sikh males, increasingly more female Punjabi Sikhs participate. At large gatherings with a diverse audience, people of non-Punjabi origin are encouraged to participate.
