Canoe slalom is a water racing sport in which participants paddle a small boat over rough water. Different competitions specify the number of paddlers, though it is usually an individual event. Paddlers face in the direction of travel, and the boat is usually lightweight to successfully navigate around the upstream and downstream gates without touching the poles or missing them completely (competitive participants forfeit time penalties if they do so). Some slalom courses in competitions are artificially designed, allowing for customized degrees of difficulty.
