Bhakti Yoga

Bhakti yoga is an exercise system and form of yoga that is focused on achieving spiritual enlightenment. This form of yoga is considered by practitioners to be one of four paths that can be taken to achieve enlightenment, or spiritual awakening. Bhakti yoga is made up of nine elements, and participants may perform any or all of these elements to move towards the ultimate goal of achieving spiritual awakening. Bhakti yoga can be practiced on its own or in combination with other forms of yoga. Like other forms of yoga that have grown in global popularity, it has become increasingly available as a commercialized form of exercise and now carries diverse meanings, both spiritual and secular, in various communities.

What are the origins of the activity abroad and in Canada?

Yoga is estimated to originate during 5th Century BCE, as part of Hinduism and Buddhism, and was introduced to Europe and North American by Indian yoga gurus during the early 20th Century. Bhakti yoga's exact origins in Canada and the GTA are unclear.

Males and females of diverse ages and ethnocultural backgrounds.

When does it occur / How often do you take part?

Bhakti yoga occurs year round in the GTA, during regular classes at studios and occasional retreats.

Cultural Significance
