Tandem Cycling

Tandem cycling is a physical activity in which two people ride a custom-made bicycle that has two seats and two sets of pedals. Tandem cyclists may participate as a form of exercise, transportation, recreation, or sport - although tandem cycling is usually a recreational activity involving leisurely rides through uncrowded areas rather than as a competitive or commuting activity.

What are the origins of the activity abroad and in Canada?

Tandem cycling originated in the 1890s. Its exact origins in Canada are unknown but the Trailblazers Tandem Cycling Club has operated since 1987.

Who takes part?

Males and females of diverse ages and ethnocultural backgrounds. Tandem cycling is often used to provide opportunities for people with visual or listening impairments to cycle with an able-bodied partner.

When does it occur / How often do you take part?

An outdoor activity, tandem cycling is usually practiced in warmer months.
