Stroller fitness is an exercise system designed for new mothers, at least six weeks postpartum, to start or return to a fitness plan relatively soon after giving birth. Stroller fitness is practiced outdoors in groups, and participants are accompanied by their child in a stroller. Sessions are typically 60 minutes and occur twice weekly. An instructor leads participants through a warm up (stretching of upper and lower body extremities), cardio work out (intervals of walking and running behind the stroller), and a cool down. Strength exercises, such as lunges, squats, and core exercises, are usually included to help participants rebuild their strength after giving birth. Some exercises incorprorate participants' babies (e.g. lying on a yoga mat) as a way to increase stimulation and bonding between the mother and her child.
